About

I’m a woodworker and artist based in Asheville, North Carolina. For years I’ve been drawn to the incredible illustrations found on vintage playing cards from the 1940s through 1960s — a true Golden Age of American design. These little artworks were mass-produced, used, and then largely forgotten. I believe they deserve a better fate. SunnySlab was born from the simple idea of giving these beautiful, overlooked illustrations a permanent home. Each SunnySlab is a solid block of walnut, carefully routed and assembled by hand. Inside a recessed cavity, a genuine vintage playing card floats behind clear acrylic, protected and presented like a small museum piece or reliquary. I finish every piece with zero VOC oil for a warm, satin, furniture-quality feel that highlights the natural beauty of the wood. The result is a substantial, tactile object that feels special — something you’ll want to keep and pass down. As our shop grows, we’ll be expanding into original slab art by contemporary illustrators, creating new designs that continue the spirit of the Golden Age. We also plan to list fine wood functional and decorative objects that make meaningful gifts and home decor, perfectly suited for the mid century aesthetic. Whether you love mid-century modern design, quirky vintage illustration, or just want a unique piece of art for your home, SunnySlab offers something different: small, meaningful treasures that celebrate the best of American graphic design from a bygone era. Thank you for supporting a one-person studio and helping give these forgotten artworks a second life.
